WomanUp :: Talk Back is a collaborative art installation that seeks to serve as a conversation starter about topics that are important to women in the creative community. Community members contribute their thoughts and ideas on the topic in a visual way — by adding to the physical canvas. Pieces and parts are added to the story and, over time, allow us to explore, experience and discuss issues through the art that is created.
Our proposed topic for CDW is “Misrepresentation.” Our goals is to explore the construction of various female archetypes in popular media/culture and how these contribute to the overall understanding of the role of women in modern society. Particularly, we seek to discuss:
What responsibility do creatives have in representing the role of women in society? Are current media representations accurate? Are they genuine and authentic? What happens when business agendas clash with what’s “right”?
While the goal of Talk Back is largely centered around the expression of ideas and conversation, we hope that the conversation leads beyond awareness and becomes a springboard for concrete actions that can help us alter the course for womenkind as whole.
